The Venice International Film Festival

The Venice International Film Festival is the oldest international film festival in the world. Founded by Count Giuseppe Volpi in 1932, the festival has since taken place every year in late August or early September on the island of the Lido, Venice, Italy.It is known world-wide for the International Film Festival, the International Art Exhibition and the International Architecture Exhibition, and continues the great tradition of the Festival of Contemporary Music, the Theatre Festival, now flanked by the Festival of Contemporary Dance.

It is clear to see that the Venice International Film Festival is the most creative, enriching,  contemporary festival which consists of diverse music, dance and art exhibitions. This typical film festival awards the best film on screen in competition with ‘Leone d’Oro’ (Golden Lion) and the ‘Leone d’Argento’ (Silver Lion) given to the best director.

In observing the top 3 famous international film festivals worldwide, I was able to identify the fact that different film festivals have their own sense of uniqueness in referring the name of awards, their way of presenting the film festival in creativity and variety. It was interesting for me to see how these top 3 film festivals are widely known and are held annually for its recognition and reputation.

The Berlin International Film Festival

The Berlin International Film Festival also called the Berlinale is one of the world's leading film festivals and most reputable media events. It is held in Berlin, Germany. The festival has been celebrated annually in February since 1978 and the 62^nd Berlin International Film Festival was held from 9 to 19 February 2012. With 274,000 tickets sold and 487,000 admissions it is considered the largest publicly attended film festival worldwide. Up to 400 films are shown in several sections and about 20 films compete for the awards in the film festival and about 20 000 professionals from over 130 countries attend the Berlin International Film Festival.

Awards are divided into sections and the highest prize is known as the ‘Golden Bear’ and it is awarded for the best film at the Berlin International Film Festival. The ‘Silver Bear’ is also an award for individual achievement in acting and directing best short films. It can be seen that The Berlin International Film Festival is segmented into different areas and this allows the audience, actors and actresses to be engaged with the film festival.

I was able to detect 7 different film sections throughout the film festival as it is evident and diverse films from its country of origin; compete in the segment of Competition and Berlinale Shorts. It also contains Gay and Lesbian icons as it is shown in the segment of Panorama and aesthetic styles of films are introduced and transgendered issues are also brought up in this category. This category of issues may also be shared with one another or between countries and I think that it is reasonable to understand the different interpretation of films and icons and optimistically view these typical film genres.

The Cannes International Film Festival

The Cannes International Film is an annual film festival held in Cannes, France, which previews new films of all genres including documentaries from around the world. Founded in 1946, it is the world's most prestigious and publicized film festival. The 65^th annual Cannes Film Festival took place from May 16 to May 27, 2012.

In the Cannes International Film invites actors and actresses all over the world and diverse awards are given out on the festival. The most prestigious award is known as the Palme d’Or (“Golden Palm”) and it is given out at Cannes for the best film. In the 2012 Cannes Film festival, the Palme d’Or was given out to the movie AMOUR (LOVE) directed by Michael Haneke. Different films from diverse countries are introduced in this film festival including Hollywood, French, Belgium, Germany, Canadian, Korean, Japanese, English, Russian, Indian, Spanish, Mexican, Bosnian, Chinese, Australian, Brazilian, Thai, Turkish, New Zealand, Lebanese, Iran, Polish, Portuguese, Swedish and Bulgarian.

In my personal opinion, Cannes film festival consists of short films and these films are represented at the Competition and workshops and conferences are set aside for people to meet, exchange ideas and promote films. I think that this famous Cannes Film Festival has opened the doors to diverse films from different countries and it has allowed the directors, casts to get together and form a sense of unity in sharing ideas and thoughts in exploring the world of films.
